Bloober Team tells about the difficulties to be the first studio releasing the game on Unreal Engine 5

The Layers of Fear horror from Bloober Team will soon receive a remake, the output of which should take place in a few days. The game is highlighted by the use of the Unreal Engine 5 engine, becoming the first game from the third party released on the new version of the Epic Games engine.

In an interview with the WCCFTECH portal, the programmer Krzyshtof Kansi and technical artist Mikhal Gavron talked about the use of Unreal Engine 5. According to them, work on the new version turned out to be extremely pleasant, despite the difficulties associated with the fact that they were one of the first to use new technologies.

Work with Unreal Engine 5 Fast and very pleasant. If we talk about the speed of work, then Lumen is a great improvement. Thanks to him, we see all the effects at once, without the need for several hours "bake" light.

The use of new technology is always an exciting call. During the previous cooperation with ANSHAR Studios and Bloober Team when working on Observer: System Redux, we were among the first games for the new generation of consoles, so this is not the first time we are faced with this task.

And as in past such cases of working with new technologies, we have to learn a lot, to plan and debug a lot in the process. And, as always, there are moments that were surprisingly good, and the obstacles that we did not expect. However, the total experience turned out to be very pleasant, and we are satisfied with the result.

Layers of Fear is currently using Unreal Engine version 5.1, but the studio does not exclude the possibility of switching to version 5.2. However, they still study the possibility of transition before making any statements.

The game will use Lumen technologies to create a more realistic light and shadows that allow you to create dynamic lighting that responds to events in the game. Another new Unreal Engine 5 – Nanite technology, but it will not be used in Layers of Fear, since, according to the studio, it serves to facilitate the rendering of the open world and is not needed for a linear game, such as Layers of Fear.

Layers of Fear will be released on June 15, 2023 on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S | X. The game will be a remake of the first two games in one package, and will also include an unrelated campaign.
